Things that go Bump in the Night (and sometimes early morning)…

What’s that? You ask.  That brown mafia clan that is out to take away your pride and joy.  It was a terrible blow.  A professional hit.  She became part of the family just last month.  You named her Christine.   Oh how she used to shimmer in the sun.  Her smooth slender aerodynamic body is no longer smooth or aerodynamic.  There is an apple tree nestled into her side with glass and red delicious apples in her back seat.  That dirty wise guy got away unscathed.  Mission accomplished.  Plus one for the brown mafia.  When you swerved to dodge that deer, you spun out of control and landed in an apple orchard instead, becoming one with a tree.  The adjuster said the car is a complete loss.  The frame has sprung and there’s nothing they can do to fix her.  She’ll be stripped down and sold for parts.  Luckily this time, you walked away with a few bumps and bruises.  You might not have been so lucky.

    Don’t Veer for Deer

It’s that time of year again.  Actually it has been since October when the rut began for white tail deer.  This time of year deer are more active than ever, constantly on the move.  Your likely to see them dart out in front of you if your out in the evening or early hours of the morning.  According to Richard J Miller from the MDCC, most severe injuries and deaths occur when a driver swerves to avoid hitting a deer.

“Statistics show that most motorist deaths and injuries occur when drivers swerve to avoid hitting a deer and, instead, hit a fixed object, such as a tree or another vehicle,” said Michigan Deer Crash Coalition Chairman Richard J. Miller… http://www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,1607,7-151-9620_11057-129929–,00.htm

Last year in Michigan the MDCC stated that more than 60,000 deer crashes have been reported of which 10 of those included deaths.  The MDCC also estimates car-deer crashes to cost $130 million in damages a year with the average insurance claim about $2,100.  So if you must be out driving between dusk and dawn, slow down and drive a little more defensively.  Expect to see a pair of yellow glowing eyes off to the side or road waiting for his/her chance to send your Christine to her demise.

Check out the MDCC and SEMCOG for statistics, maps, and driving tips.
